How Is the National Merit Selection Index Calculated?
Selection Index = (2 × Reading and Writing score + Math score) ÷ 10. Each section score is between 160 and 760, so the index runs from 48 (160 and 160) to 228 (760 and 760).
Reading and Writing counts twice in the formula. Raising your Reading and Writing score by 10 points adds 2 to your index, while raising your Math score by 10 points adds 1.
- Reading and Writing 700 + Math 650: (1400 + 650) ÷ 10 = 205.
- Reading and Writing 740 + Math 720: (1480 + 720) ÷ 10 = 220.
- Reading and Writing 680 + Math 700: (1360 + 700) ÷ 10 = 206.
How National Merit Recognition Works
Only juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT are considered for the National Merit Scholarship Program. About 16,000 students are named Semifinalists, chosen state by state in proportion to each state's share of graduating seniors, and about 34,000 more are named Commended Students. Semifinalists then apply to become Finalists to compete for scholarships.
Because Semifinalists are selected within each state, the cutoff Selection Index is different in every state and changes every year. Check your own state's cutoff once it is announced, usually in September of your senior year.
Where the Selection Index Comes From
The Selection Index is calculated from your PSAT/NMSQT score report, taken in the fall of junior year. Scores from the PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 are not used for National Merit. If you only want your total PSAT score, use the PSAT calculator.
