To get B (80%)61.3%
To get C (70%)28%
To get D (60%)secured

How the calculation works

Think of your final grade as a weighted sum: each part of the course contributes proportionally to its stated weight. A final exam worth 40% has four times the impact of a quiz worth 10%. This is why the required score can swing so dramatically — when the final carries heavy weight, even a mediocre performance elsewhere can be overcome, but a light final means your grade is mostly locked in by week 12.

Once you have the target number, the question shifts from what to how. Passive rereading is the least effective way to prepare. TikoNote converts your notes and lecture slides into AI-generated flashcards and practice quizzes so you spend your remaining study time on active retrieval — the method shown to stick under exam pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What score do I need on my final to get a B?

It depends on your current grade and the exam weight. If you have an 80% and the final is worth 30%, you need exactly 80% to maintain a B. If you have 75%, you need roughly 92%. Use the Simple tab above — it takes under 10 seconds.

Can I calculate my final grade without knowing the exam weight?

Not precisely. The weight determines how much leverage the exam has on your overall grade. Check your course syllabus on Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle. For points-based courses, divide the final's max points by the total course points.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

The Weighted tab shows a live badge with your current total and warns when it's off. Weights below 100% understate your average; above 100% makes the result invalid. Return to your syllabus to fix the values.

What does it mean if I need more than 100% on the final?

The target grade is mathematically unreachable with the remaining grade weight. Lower your goal by one letter grade and recalculate. If even passing requires over 100%, contact your professor about extra credit options immediately.

How do weighted grades work?

Each component's score is multiplied by its weight (decimal) and the products are summed. Example: 90% × 0.20 (homework) + 75% × 0.40 (midterm) + 85% × 0.40 (final) = 18 + 30 + 34 = 82%. Every point in a high-weight component matters more.

Is a final exam grade the same as a final course grade?

No. The final exam is one assessment at semester's end. Your final course grade is what goes on your transcript — it incorporates every weighted component. A great final can boost your course grade, but only to the degree its weight allows.

What GPA does each letter grade correspond to?

Standard 4.0 scale: A (90–100%) = 4.0, B (80–89%) = 3.0, C (70–79%) = 2.0, D (60–69%) = 1.0, F (<60%) = 0.0. With plus/minus: B+ = 3.3, B– = 2.7. Always verify against your school's official conversion table.

Can I use this for a pass/fail course?

Yes. Enter your school's minimum passing percentage (typically 60–70%) as the desired grade. If the required score comes out negative, you've already secured a passing grade regardless of how the final goes.
