How Is AP Lang Scored?
The AP English Language and Composition exam has two sections. Section I is 45 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour and counts for 45% of your score. Section II is 3 free-response essays in 2 hours and 15 minutes (including a 15-minute reading period) and counts for 55%. There is no penalty for wrong answers on the multiple-choice section.
The College Board combines the sections into a weighted composite out of 100 and converts it to a 1 to 5 score using cutoffs that are set after each exam and not published in advance. Any calculator is therefore an estimate. This one uses estimated cutoffs of about 73 for a 5, 58 for a 4, and 43 for a 3.
The Three AP Lang Essays and the 6-Point Rubric
All three essays use the same 6-point rubric: 1 point for a defensible thesis, up to 4 points for evidence and commentary, and 1 point for sophistication. Each essay counts equally, so one weak essay costs you as much as a weak multiple-choice section.

What Score Do You Need for a 3, 4, or 5 on AP Lang?
These ranges shift by a few points from year to year depending on how hard the exam was, so treat them as a target zone rather than an exact line. For example, 27 of 45 multiple-choice questions correct (60%) plus a 4 on each essay comes to about 64 on this scale, which is a 4.
- AP score 5: about 73 or more out of 100.
- AP score 4: about 58 to 72.
- AP score 3: about 43 to 57.
- AP score 2: about 29 to 42.
- AP score 1: below about 29.

How Much College Credit Does an AP Lang Score Earn?
A 3 or higher counts as a qualifying score. Many colleges grant composition credit or a writing-requirement exemption for a 3 or 4, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5. Policies vary by school, so check the AP credit policy page of each college on your list.
