How Is AP Lit Scored?
The AP English Literature and Composition exam has two sections. Section I is 55 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour and counts for 45% of your score. Section II is 3 free-response essays in 2 hours and counts for 55%. There is no penalty for wrong answers on the multiple-choice section, and each multiple-choice question is worth slightly less than on AP Lang because there are more of them.
The College Board combines the sections into a weighted composite out of 100 and converts it to a 1 to 5 score using cutoffs that are set after each exam and not published in advance. Any calculator is therefore an estimate. This one uses estimated cutoffs of about 73 for a 5, 58 for a 4, and 43 for a 3.
The Three AP Lit Essays and the 6-Point Rubric
All three essays use the same 6-point rubric: 1 point for a defensible thesis, up to 4 points for evidence and commentary, and 1 point for sophistication. Each essay counts equally toward the 55% free-response share.

What Score Do You Need for a 3, 4, or 5 on AP Lit?
These ranges shift by a few points from year to year depending on how hard the exam was, so treat them as a target zone rather than an exact line.
- AP score 5: about 73 or more out of 100.
- AP score 4: about 58 to 72.
- AP score 3: about 43 to 57.
- AP score 2: about 29 to 42.
- AP score 1: below about 29.

How Much College Credit Does an AP Lit Score Earn?
A 3 or higher counts as a qualifying score. Many colleges grant literature or English elective credit for a 3 or 4, and selective colleges often ask for a 4 or 5. Policies vary by school, so check the AP credit policy page of each college on your list.
